Maria Montessori was born on 31.08.1870 in Chiaravalle in the province of Ancona, Italy. She began her studies in the field of natural science and later continued her studies in medicine. In 1896 she was the first woman to qualify as a medical doctor in Italy.
From her work with mentally handicapped children, she formed a fundamental understanding of the study of child development. This work led her to pursue her studies in the fields of education and psychology.
In1907 Maria Montessori took over the management of a nursery in a poor district in Rome. She tried out the educational materials which she had developed, on the healthy and mentally normal children and gained new insights for her educational methods.
Through lectures and training programmes, her educational philosophy and methods achievements were recognised and acclaimed beyond the borders of Italy. Numerous children’s houses and schools were established world-wide
Maria Montessori died in 1952 at the age of 82. Until her death, she advocated the spread of the Montessori educational concept.
